Jewelry Cleaning Myths Debunked

Jewelry Cleaning Myths Debunked

When it comes to keeping your jewelry sparkling, the internet is full of DIY hacks, but not all of them are safe. In fact, some popular cleaning “tips” can actually damage your diamonds, gold, or delicate gemstones.

At Teresa and Sons, your trusted Montreal jeweller, we've heard it all - and we're here to separate fact from fiction. Here are the most common jewelry cleaning myths debunked, and how to care for your pieces the right way.

Myth 1: Toothpaste is Great for Cleaning Jewelry

Reality: Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch gold, platinum, and softer gemstones.

What to do instead: Use a soft toothbrush and mild dish soap to clean your pieces without damaging them. For professional results, we recommend a gentle ultrasonic cleaning, which we offer in-house.

Myth 2: Boiling Your Jewelry Makes It Shine

Reality: While boiling water might clean metal, it can crack or loosen gemstones, especially if the jewelry has been repaired or contains soft stones like opals or emeralds.

What to do instead: Stick to warm (not hot) water, and avoid temperature shock.

Myth 3: All Jewelry Can Be Cleaned the Same Way

Reality: Gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, and colored stones all need different cleaning methods.

  • Pearls: Never soak—wipe gently with a damp cloth

  • Gold & diamonds: Safe with soap and water

  • Silver: Use a specific silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish

At Teresa and Sons, we provide care tips tailored to the materials in your custom piece.

Myth 4: Jewelry Doesn’t Need to Be Cleaned Often

Reality: Oils, lotion, soap, and dirt build up faster than you think, dulling the shine of diamonds and metals.

What to do instead: Clean your jewelry once a week at home, and bring it in for a professional clean every 6-12 months. We'll even check your prongs and settings for security.

Myth 5: You Can Use Any Jewelry Cleaner on Everything

Reality: Over-the-counter cleaners can contain harsh chemicals that aren't safe for all stones or metals.

What to do instead: Only use cleaners recommended by your jeweller or make a DIY mix of mild dish soap and water. And always test a small section first.
